Secretly Y’all – Family Matters
Posted by Donk in HomeGrown Events, Public Service, Townie on May 14, 2010
It’s that time again. It’s time to dust off the folding chairs, mix some vodka into a bottle of Powerade, and get hilarious up in this B. This time the event theme is ‘Family Matters’; so… get ready for some hysterically awkward stories of psychological and probably physical abuse. The details are the same: Random Row Books, Sunday (May 16th), 7PM, $5, and bring 5 folding chairs (at least 1!). I hear that this is one of girls’ favorite line-ups yet, so it promises to be an awesome event.
More details below the cut…
A note from the girls at Secretly Y’all.

Lauren sent me a quick blurb, and it’s a slow day around here… so I’m happy to use her for content. Woo!
I think we all know that people LOOOOOOOVE to give you their advice. The minute you do any kind of show or party or event or website or whatever, you will finish, breathe a sigh of relief, turn around and there, behind you, will be several very helpful people with very helpful ideas about how you could do it better. And I’m not being sarcastic. They are really helpful. It’s just, the problem is that you’re only one person (or three) and there are infinite good ideas out there to spend your finite time putting into action. Well, the Secretly Y’all ladies have decided to harness the creative genius of their audience and storytellers (truly the best in the land) by holding a contest to determine the theme for their July show.
Secretly Y’all: In Your Own Words

The girls from Secretly Y’all are back to melt some faces with hilarity and self-deprecation. The details are the same as always: Random Row Books, Sunday, April 18th, 7PM, $5 suggested donation. These events are getting bigger and better every single time. I’m not recommending that you bring a folding chair this time. I’m telling you to bring two. Without fail there are people standing or sitting on the concrete floor at every show. I don’t know about you, but I don’t drink a whole bunch before things like this just so I can stand up for two hours and lose my buzz. Bring extra chairs. My state of intoxication may depend on you. The weather outside is gorgeous again. You should have several folding chairs in the back of your car just for impromptu white trash tailgates. There is no excuse.
I don’t have anything planned for this event, but I believe that B Yo might. That’s at least one guaranteed awesome story for the night.
Other notes: Umm… drinks beforehand… possibly at West Main.. possibly at Zinc. We’ll try to let you know.
DO NOT PARK IN THE PAVED LOT BEHIND WEST MAIN RESTAURANT!!!!!*
*I got towed from there recently… It’s not actually the lot for W. Main, the restaurant. The whole situation is ridiculous. Collier’s towing sucks.
Secretly Y’all: It’s A Wonderful Life… Or Is It?

The girls at Secretly Y’all are up to their old tricks. They’re holding another story telling event at Random Row Books on Sunday, December 13th @ 7PM. The last event was a huge success with over 75 people in the crowd! I’ll most definitely be in attendance, though I’m on the fence about telling a story this go-round. If my desperate need for attention kicks in, you can count on finding me pacing around that stage. I had a blast participating last time, but I haven’t been responsible enough to plan anything for this one.
There are a couple of important details for this go-round. I’d like to be all awesome and paraphrase the info, but I’ve accepted my lot in life as a plagiarizer and I hesitate to deviate from that. Here’s the verbatim from their site:
This time around bring a lawn chair or two for you and a friend (or a stranger). Also, this Secretly Y’all will be pay-what-you-can with a suggested 5 dollar donation.
Finally, in the spirit of the season, we’re going to be collecting donations for Community Housing Partners (CHP has served over 189,000 individuals and families, including [but not limited to] at risk youth and other families and individuals of low-income and low-wealth) and the Jefferson Area Food Bank.
We invite you to donate to CHP’s kids’ holiday store through donating toys, games, school supplies, gifts more appropriate for adults like pajamas, socks or household goods. In addition, we’re collecting old clothes and shoes that could be used for a kid’s dress-up closet for CHP. For the Jefferson Area Food Bank we’re looking for canned food donations.
So, bring $5 and a couple of cans… or earn yourself a ‘Hangover-Free Blackout Drunk Card’* by bringing in a toy. Random Row Books is on West Main St, just across from the Greyhound station. Parking was readily available last time, and I’d expect the same due to it being a Sunday night. You’ll probably find several of us pre-gaming at the W. Main Bar just before the event. I’m sure we’ll be boozing somewhere after too, just ask where if you want to join us.
We hope to see you there!
*’Hangover-free Blackout Drunk Card’ results may vary. Card is non-transferable, and is valued at 1/100th of 1 cent.
