Tour story – near death in Western PA
Posted by Loki in Reckless Irresponsibility on March 4, 2010

Years ago I was in a band. We toured a handful of times up and down the east coast, put out a few CDs, and had a grand old time. The only time I ever thought for sure that we might disappear and never be seen again was outside of Pittsburgh in 2001 (the week before 9/11).
I had booked us a show in a small town outside of Pittsburgh, PA. It seemed like a cool idea – an all ages venue on one side and a music store on the other. I also heard of a few other bands we were friendly with who had played there. The venue didn’t have a very functioning website (usually a dealbreaker for us at the time) but based on the other info I had about the place I decided to call and book us a show for our tour. [as an aside - the website for the venue is still up and hasn't changed since 1999]

Repent All Ye Sinners! The End is Nigh!

We didn’t exactly get the 60 inches of snow that word around town may have led you to expect. In fact, we only got about 28″ over the course of the two day super-mega-blizzard-that-happens-every-60-years storm. That 2+ feet was just plenty to knock out power to over 13,000 people; and many of those are still without power. I have been extremely fortunate to have maintained power throughout the entire ordeal and my mobility wasn’t really limited due to the awesomeness that is a Jeep. I spent most of the snowy weekend sledding, playing snowtaxi, more sledding, drinking, even more sledding, and going to the bar. In all of that time on the road, I’ve noticed that there aren’t nearly as many cars abandoned in ditches and roadways. A lot of folks seem to have learned a lesson from the mid-December storm. I certainly haven’t. I’m real dumb. I love driving in this stuff. When else can I do 360’s down Garrett St and have a passable excuse?
The End of Sky’s Place

Sky’s Place was a special bar in my college town. It was special because it was in the basement lounge of a sleazy 70’s era motel. It was special because the carpet and walls were still the unique shade of maroon-red that was so familiar to the dark side of the disco era. It was special because it didn’t even have its own restrooms and you were forced to stumble through the brightly lit reception area a half dozen times a night. It was also special because it was the easiest bar in town to get into and every freshman that would fit was there. The doors were naugahyde, and the windows were frosted by 20 years of dust and cigarette smoke. There was an old jukebox that had Motley Crue, Skid Row, Guns N’ Roses, any probably more; but who knew because only those three were ever played.
After a few months of burning tuition one $4 pitcher at a time, I had gotten to know the staff pretty well. One night that they were down a man, they asked me to fill in at the door. After finding out that staff drinks for half price, I could not have been more up for the job. I think it’s safe to say that the staff were usually the drunkest people in the bar each night. On the nights that we weren’t, it was because Sky was around. Sky was a big dude. NFL big. About 6′9″ and 350 lbs. And seriously, NFL big. He played for Detroit and Buffalo in the pro’s. You tried not to piss him off.
