Secretly Y’all: At War

Ok,

It’s Secretly Y’all time again. Due to one of the most unpredictable and not exactly awesome weeks ever, I haven’t been able to get this posted as soon as I’d like. Much Thanks to B Yo for getting the info out in a more prudent timeframe:

Charlottesville Derby Dames – Snow Brawl!

Charlottesville Derby Dames - Snow Brawl!

Ok. It’s time to stump for another awesome local event. Coming from a similar vein as CLAW (Charlottesville Lady Arm Wrestlers), we’ve got another group that’s mixing some of my favorite things: Sex, Violence, Booze, and Charity. If you guys haven’t been to one of these events, you really are missing out. As an extreme example of how great this can be, there is a ‘danger zone’ right up next to the track; basically operating with the same idea as the ’splash zone’ at a Gallagher show. Except, instead of being splattered with exploded watermelon… you’ll probably be hit by a flying mass of knees, elbows, and metal. Bad ass, right?

Secretly Y’all: Love Stories & Other Lies

Here we go again. Another Secretly Y’all event, and this time they’ve upped the ante to make things more X-Rated than usual. Personally, I’m trying to up the ante by making this blog post even more lazy and useless than usual. I’ll be honest. It’s tough. I really knocked it out of the old half-assed lazy ballpark last time.

So, here’s everybody’s favorite part (read: my favorite part) of the Secretly Y’all announcement posts. It’s the part where I plagiarize everything directly from their site.

Here’s some more stuff you might want to know:

  • As with the last few times, it’s pay what you can with a suggested $5 donation.
  • We are collecting toiletries for The Haven (the day shelter on first and market that’s run by TJAC), especially tampons and sanitary napkins. So come baring these gifts if you can!
  • Troop Leader Melissa White will be there representing her girl scout troop (Troop 42) and delivering the cookies some of you ordered last time. If you missed a chance to order, there will be a chance to buy cookies at the event.
  • Bring a chair! If you have a chair to bring, it’s a big help to us.

Most of the important info is the same. Random Row Books. Sunday (Feb. 14th). 7PM. Per the TXTNLY participation this go-round; only the unstoppable Belmont Yo will be throwing down the prose. I’d like to enter the fray, but I’m sure that restraining orders would be violated, illegalities would come to light, and an ex-stalker or two might shoot me right off the stage. Or maybe it would be poison… women are big on the poison thing, right?

Anyway, please come out this Sunday to watch B Yo kick ass again. Remember to bring a chair, as seats are always in short supply at these things. If you bring a folding chair, it’s a good idea to write your name on it. You wouldn’t believe how many green folding chairs showed up to the last one. It’s also a great idea to bring a few bucks to help the girls pay rent for the space, and anything extra goes to charity.

If you want to catch up with us beforehand, you can find us pre-gaming over mediocre food and drinks at West Main Bar & Grill*. We’ll probably start around 5:30-6PM.

We hope to see you in the crowd!/at the bar!/donating some toiletries & cash!

*Attention Stalkers: This would be the ideal time for poisonings. I’d suggest aiming for drinks rather than food, as the food only holds a 50/50 chance of being edible pre-poisoning.

Secretly Y’all:Overworked and Underpaid: Tales from the Workplace

Secretly Yall: Overworked and Underpaid: Tales from the Workplace

Secretly Y'all: Overworked and Underpaid: Tales from the Workplace

So, I’m a big fan of the girls over at Secretly Y’all. Sure, they’re pretty cool folks, but it’s mostly because they update their blog so often that it gives me content to write about over here; ergo we don’t look like such a ghost town. Don’t get me wrong. We totally are. I’m starting to suspect that Loki & Belmont Yo didn’t make it through the blizzard of ‘09, and I’m left to wander around this place like the Omega Man, surviving on twinkies and vodka. Honestly, add some Texas Pete and that’s almost exactly my diet now.

Anyway, to get to the point here, there’s another Secretly Y’all event coming up this weekend. Most of the details are the same (Random Row Books, Sunday, 7PM). I believe that there is still a $5 suggested donation at the door (the girls have to pay rent for the space), and it’s recommended to bring a folding chair for yourself. There’s more info over at the Secretly Y’all site, which you can get to by clicking the image or checking out our blogroll on the right side. I’d copy/paste the info over here like I usually do, but my clipboard is currently full of the content that I’m busy plagiarizing from other blogs. You’re gonna have to work for it this week. You really should be checking out that blog on the regular anyway. They keep a fairly steady stream of content going and don’t allow their social lives (read: alcoholism) to prevent them from constantly putting up new stuff. That’s a lesson that some of you could stand to learn. Oh wait… no… no. I’m the one that needs that lesson.

I’m hoping to participate again this week, but it’s not a sure thing just yet. The girls have had such a positive response that they’re still tweaking the speaker structure in order to make sure that all of the new folks get a chance. I believe the first 7 speakers will be all new, and then they’re going to be picking names out of a hat until time runs out. We’ll be pre-gaming before the show in hopes of amassing enough liquid courage to perform if the hat rules in our favor. If you want to join us for the pre-game, we should be at the West Main bar starting at around 5:30 or 6PM.

Hope to see you there!

Secretly Y’all: It’s A Wonderful Life… Or Is It?

The girls at Secretly Y’all are up to their old tricks.  They’re holding another story telling event at Random Row Books on Sunday, December 13th @ 7PM. The last event was a huge success with over 75 people in the crowd! I’ll most definitely be in attendance, though I’m on the fence about telling a story this go-round. If my desperate need for attention kicks in, you can count on finding me pacing around that stage. I had a blast participating last time, but I haven’t been responsible enough to plan anything for this one.

There are a couple of important details for this go-round. I’d like to be all awesome and paraphrase the info, but I’ve accepted my lot in life as a plagiarizer and I hesitate to deviate from that. Here’s the verbatim from their site:

This time around bring a lawn chair or two for you and a friend (or a stranger). Also, this Secretly Y’all will be pay-what-you-can with a suggested 5 dollar donation.

Finally, in the spirit of the season, we’re going to be collecting donations for Community Housing Partners (CHP has served over 189,000 individuals and families, including [but not limited to] at risk youth and other families and individuals of low-income and low-wealth) and the Jefferson Area Food Bank.

We invite you to donate to CHP’s kids’ holiday store through donating toys, games, school supplies, gifts more appropriate for adults like pajamas, socks or household goods. In addition, we’re collecting old clothes and shoes that could be used for a kid’s dress-up closet for CHP. For the Jefferson Area Food Bank we’re looking for canned food donations.

So, bring $5 and a couple of cans… or earn yourself a ‘Hangover-Free Blackout Drunk Card’* by bringing in a toy. Random Row Books is on West Main St, just across from the Greyhound station. Parking was readily available last time, and I’d expect the same due to it being a Sunday night. You’ll probably find several of us pre-gaming at the W. Main Bar just before the event. I’m sure we’ll be boozing somewhere after too, just ask where if you want to join us.

We hope to see you there!

*’Hangover-free Blackout Drunk Card’ results may vary. Card is non-transferable, and is valued at 1/100th of 1 cent.
