A note from the girls at Secretly Y’all.

Lauren sent me a quick blurb, and it’s a slow day around here… so I’m happy to use her for content. Woo!

I think we all know that people LOOOOOOOVE to give you their advice. The minute you do any kind of show or party or event or website or whatever, you will finish, breathe a sigh of relief, turn around and there, behind you, will be several very helpful people with very helpful ideas about how you could do it better. And I’m not being sarcastic. They are really helpful. It’s just, the problem is that you’re only one person (or three) and there are infinite good ideas out there to spend your finite time putting into action. Well, the Secretly Y’all ladies have decided to harness the creative genius of their audience and storytellers (truly the best in the land) by holding a contest to determine the theme for their July show.

FFA IV: Makin’ That Paper, Boo.

Feel the rain.

Well…..The cat is out of the bag. We were all really drunk on Cristal last week, and we slipped up. We let you guys know that we’re raking in that cashmoney these days.

I guess it wasn’t really a surprise for some of you. Ever since it started, I’ve been paying for my bar tabs, dinners, and grocery store trips by making it rain. And let me tell you… the money.. it doesn’t just change those that have it. It changes those that don’t, too. What’s the big deal Food Lion clerk? You were happy to make conversation back when I was paying for my beer with a credit card… but now that I’m raining paper on you at the register… you just glare contemptuously? What’s up with all the jealousy? It’s a good thing you don’t have money like this. You’d probably be really obnoxious with it.

Thankfully, we’re pretty humble people, so we’re not going to be all nouveau riche about it. If you see one of us at the bar; don’t be afraid to ask us to buy you a drink. We like to share it with the little people. At the very least, we’ll probably wad up a ball of $20’s and throw them at you or tell you to dance for it.

With all of the newfound fame, riches, and attention that we are having to deal with, some of us are hiring assistants and forming entourages. Please submit your application and list any pertinent skills below. Exotic dancing experience is a plus.

High Drama at China King

Chinese Resto

About a year and a half ago I had an intense evening at the China King Buffet. I know what you’re thinking – “Wow, I know. Their Mongolian barbeque rocks.” But no, that’s not at all what I’m talking about. And shame on you… their Mongolian BBQ is substandard at best. I sometimes think of this intense evening and the memory of it keeps striking me as surreal.

Bicycle Safety in Charlottesville?

Cycles & The City

You guys have most likely heard about the poor grad student that was recently killed on W. Main while riding his bicycle. It sounds like it’s one of those cases where the truck took a right in front of him, and he couldn’t do anything to avoid it. This is terrifying. This is the exact sort of thing that makes me afraid to ride a bicycle in this town. Many of the streets here are too narrow to allow for a proper bike lane, and driver/bicycle awareness is a problem anywhere you go. It has been explained to me that the stretch of West Main between Maya and the ABC store is a gauntlet of car doors and drivers that won’t share a lane.

Every spring/summer I start thinking of finding a bicycle to get around town on, but these horror stories keep me from ever executing the plan. What about you guys? Do any of you use a bicycle as a primary mode of transportation? Any unfortunate incidents that scared you away from riding a bike on the streets? I know that B yo used to make a living riding bikes in a much larger city, so I’d be interested to hear if/how it feels differently in Charlottesville.
