I Make My Own Booze

It’s true. I brew my own beer. It is a surprisingly easy process. You just have to be able to follow directions, have a basic grasp of some scientific principles, a hatred of bacteria, and a love of yeast.

The upsides of brewing your own beer are numerous. For one, you’ve never had fresher beer. I guarantee it. Try drinking an IPA that is only 3 weeks old. OMFG! The hops kicks your tongue’s ass. The malt characteristics are pronounced. It’s a whole new world of beer taste.

The Clash saved my youth

… and Fugazi saved my adulthood.

I was not a terribly unhappy kid growing up. I had the same problems most teenagers do – self esteem, puberty, and feeling sort of grown up while still having to rely on my parents for everything. Seventh and eighth grade were brutal years that I would not ever choose to live again except for a singular definining moment that I will never forget: the tape of the Clash that my cousin made for me. He was older and in law school at UVa, this was probably 1988. Prior to having my eyes opened by the Clash I’d listened to the Beatles a lot, had gotten into Pink Floyd, and liked my dad’s old blues records. Top 6 Man-Heroes

This is by no means a complete list. This list, in my mind at least, gathers a handful of men who lived unapologetically and who stood for something, anything. In today’s world of post-revisionism and relative morality, standing for something is admirable in and of itself.

  • Bruce Campbell – actor, author
  • Frank Sinatra – “singer”
  • Alexander the Great – king, general, legend
  • Teddy Roosevelt – Rough Rider, President, conservationist
  • Bode Miller – Olympic skier, drunk
  • Charles Bukowski – author, poet, pig, drunk

Psychedelic Mountain Adventures

Back in my halcyon days attending PVCC, I used to hang with the Cool Crew. PVCC, for those uninitiated in the ways of Charlottesville, stands for Piedmont Virginia Community College. Harvard on the Hill, Stanford in the Sewer, Buford in the Basement. The guys in the Cool Crew were buddies of mine from as far back as elementary school. We were all stoners and worse. Drunks, punks, and wannabe playboys.

The Cool Crew were all members of the now-defunct band FFO. Depending on which member of the band you asked and how wasted they were, FFO could stand for either the Funk and Fury Orchestra or Fuck the Fat Off.

When not actually attending school, I worked at the now-defunct Blue Bird Café as a dishwasher. When not working I was usually shirking my school responsibilities, like homework and papers, for pursuits with more short-term rewards: drugs, booze, and/or women to be precise. Throw in a little petty larceny now and then and you get the picture.

Secretly Y’all: At War

Ok,

It’s Secretly Y’all time again. Due to one of the most unpredictable and not exactly awesome weeks ever, I haven’t been able to get this posted as soon as I’d like. Much Thanks to B Yo for getting the info out in a more prudent timeframe:

FFA II – Electric Boogaloo

Warning: any comments in this FFA that follow a cohesive pattern or structure will be deleted. I’m recently single and the dating pool has never looked shallower. Is this going to be a crazy spring or what? I predict that you will all either be pregnant or married by May. And not by me. I’m just saying….
