Fact. It is statistically proven that 100% of humans love to watch a car crash in slow motion. Links/references? No… I actually just made that up, but you need to stop living in the past if you want this relationship to work.
Instead, you should join us in watching as our former haunt, cVillain, lumbers toward a gruesome death. I’ll admit that I was impressed to see so many regulars reappear on the first couple of days post-relaunch, even bringing along chipper attitudes and optimism about the newly Lazarus-ified blog. However, there has been an undercurrent of change amongst the comments. Regulars are quickly tiring of fluff posts, and the site is quickly returning to having more interesting content in the threads than the articles themselves. I’d like to find out what’s going on inside the minds of the people that have been the lifeblood of the site for years.
To start, I’ll run you through my phases of disenchantment. I was one of the last active contributors on the site before the doors were closed, and I was part of the committee that discussed possibly keeping the site alive. After some basic logistics, we all realized that the site had peaked long before and was already well into its dénouement. At that time, the team of potential new owners decided to pass. Even for free, we felt that it was best left to die with some shred of dignity. Over the course of the next month, I happened across a few sites that had loaded up the cVillain shell and archives, presumably in consideration of taking the reins. I didn’t actually think much of them. Surely, anyone else would remember the post-sharktank episodes of Happy Days, and learn a lesson from them. Surely. Surely?
No.
Jump to early September, and a ‘little birdie’ whispered some cVillain relevant information in my ear. It was being resurrected. Beyond that, it was being brought back by someone that we never knew as an active member on the old site. A lurker maybe? Those details have yet to be explained. I managed to get a sneak peek of the site about a week before it was relaunched, and there was actually a healthy backlog of content. It was a promising start. It suggested that there would be some interesting content posted on the site, which the lack thereof was largely responsible for the demise of the previous iteration. Things were looking up.
There was a decent amount of buzz around town before the relaunch, and I heard many sides. There were some that were upset. There were some that were thrilled to see it return. There were those that could not care less, but really needed a good timesink for the working hours. Personally, I’ve been on both sides of the fence. Initially, I was annoyed with the fact that an outsider was handed the keys to the archives (and your email and IP addresses). I just didn’t feel that it was going to be the same site, and as such they didn’t deserve our archives. Once things relaunched, the pendulum swung to the other side for a bit as it was great so see so many regulars back together and champing at the bit. Nowadays, I suppose I’ve lost the momentum, because I’m somewhat apathetic toward the site. I do check it a few times a day, and backspace away a comment here and there. I’ve come to the realization that the new site has nothing to do with me, and it would be wrong of me to call out every fallacy and error that I see. Well, it would be wrong of me to do so there. There, I’m trying to abide by the rule of, ‘if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all’. Here, it’s a free for all.
- Editing. It’s embarrassing at times. I’m a firm believer that poor spelling/grammar skills are a symptom of ignorance. I realize that there are exceptions to the rule, but I’d suggest a spellcheck at the very minimum before posting content. First impressions are difficult to overcome.
-User/Content Farming. This was a major point of contention on the last site, just on the possibility that it was happening. I don’t think that people are going to be impressed with the introductory post that mentions that it is a revenue producing venture. I’m not sure this requires much elucidation.
I really wanted to make a bullet point about the ‘$5K in the hole’ comment that was made today about operating costs to get the site back online. It’s absolutely ridiculous. I have spoken with two people that currently host cVillain elsewhere, and both were able to do so for zero dollars and zero cents… and an afternoon. I am aware that the live site requires more work than a hosted archive, but I believe hyperbole has been shooting people in the foot here.
Does anyone else see the bolts coming loose? How do you feel about cVillain 2.0? I’d like to see it succeed, but I don’t feel that it’s going to happen in the current scenario.

I am glad that cVillain is back, but it doesn’t feel the same. It is douche-ier. I think the site was down too long and lost momentum, although I supposed that happened before the doors shut. I am interested in seeing how it will play out and so I will keep watching. I’m glad I found this is a new haunting spot.

I think that there have been some changes in a lot of lives which means it is harder to post on a regular basis… Shen’s new job, I’m back at school, otter layed off, Byo sad and just a black square, Echo gone etc etc.
If there are no new lurkers that take this and run with it, there just won’t be any momentum. We may have been bitches but DAMN we could keep a fucking thread rolling along nicely.

Floozy has a good point, and I think it ties in w/ what rwo said. Most of the active players have moved on, and it was slowing to a stop. I think that’s basically the conclusion that we came to at Floozy’s house, when we decided to pass.
I would like to see it succeed, but it just doesn’t feel like it’s picking up positive momentum. From the comment today, it seems like he’s having a harder time generating content than expected. I can understand that. I’m learning that when you think back to all of your stories, a lot cannot be applied to a post well (for illegal content, lack of a punchline, et cetera). I think getting over that hurdle is going to be the key to whether or not they can stay relevant. I’ll be interested to hear how the party goes down tomorrow night. There are lots of folks on the invite list that don’t read the site, but I can understand massmailing (x lounge) to get the word out. I’m sure it will bring in new lurkers/commenters.

I would love some fresh meat on the site(TWSS), but they have to be able to be called a fuckwit Mccuntywaffle and not get all huffy about it. I hate it when lurkers have a go and then slouch off when given a good old verbal thrashing. Except for Verbal Sniper…DANG that was a fun day.Record fun day.

It’s going to take time, I think. It’s basically a new blog again and you can’t just rest on the laurels of your archives. For me, the meat of that site was in the posts and the comments were just extra goodness. It is a lot of work cranking out good posts and I think Kyle knows that, which is why he eventually started focusing more on his ventures that made money rather than the site which was taking up more and more of his time and wasn’t seeing much of a return for it. That’s the way things go.
I know it’s easy to say ‘things were better back in the old days’ and there is a bit of truth to that. It was great, and it still could be again – the new owners just need to get their sea legs. Anyone who took over Cvillain and brought it back from the dead was gonna have to have thick skin and deal with people bitching about anything and everything. Welcome to the interwebz.

who is the new guy? was he even on the site before?
#7 by belmont yo on September 16, 2009 - 11:13 am
The new cvillain killed my dog
#8 by Loki on September 16, 2009 - 11:33 am
@6 not to my knowledge
@7 how many dogs have you owned b’yo?
#9 by belmont yo on September 16, 2009 - 11:51 am
I’ve never owned a dog. Well, I got one when I was 3, and it bit my face and had to go away. My senile grandmother who lived in the basement had one, “Twiggy”, but Alzheimer’s and pet care make for very odd bedfellows. Hilarity ensued for everyone but twiggy.
The pack being massacred by these various websites and bands are metaphors for my inner witch doctor.
Im not sad, Im fucking lonely. And totally on topic, as always.
#10 by Donk on September 16, 2009 - 12:09 pm
I think we’ve found the issue here.
Byo. Go to the SPCA and get a dog. Then you can blog all about puppyhood, and post puppy pictures that will make all of the blogladies swoon. I bet your kids would love it to.
#11 by shenanigans on September 16, 2009 - 1:21 pm
The gas station by my house is giving away pugs. That sentence makes me shudder.
#12 by Donk on September 16, 2009 - 2:06 pm
They really need to get that car wash fixed. The ‘Free Pug with a Fill Up’ program is running out of pugs.
#13 by belmont yo on September 16, 2009 - 2:09 pm
No dogs. No pets but sea monkeys. Shit will sort itself out, or it won’t. No worries.
So, um… new cvillains kinda sensitive eh? Or, er, something…
/jacked back
#14 by Floozy on September 16, 2009 - 3:05 pm
Don’t get a dog. Mine has gone from 16lbs to 47lbs in 4 weeks, and one of my kids is missing. I have never seen a creature eat so much in my life.
#15 by Donk on September 16, 2009 - 3:17 pm
Yes, b yo. Just a tad sensitive. I’m failing miserably in my attempts to keep off of there. I need to just leave it be, as they don’t appear to be interested in any of my advice.
I give Alexandra points for the zombie analogy, but it doesn’t really work. Whose grandmother is it? Kyle’s? Why are they kidnapping Kyle’s grandmother?
#16 by cbob on September 16, 2009 - 3:48 pm
I’m going to the party at Ventana, it should be fun. I’m almost in the photo for the Facebook update but I hid behind some dude.
#17 by Floozy on September 16, 2009 - 4:07 pm
I’m not sure what to say to that. How can you be almost in a photo?
#18 by Donk on September 16, 2009 - 4:32 pm
Yeah. Am I still in the photo? I saw the event listing, but it has the picture of Heather and Mike.
#19 by cbob on September 16, 2009 - 4:38 pm
I think so.. I was next to you on the other side. You just see my beer.
#20 by shenanigans on September 16, 2009 - 9:53 pm
I’ll be there. With Donk’s credit card.
Tequila shots for all villains! Woooo!!!
#21 by Donk on September 16, 2009 - 9:57 pm
Damn it.
#22 by cbob on September 17, 2009 - 9:18 am
Missed you guys – it was sort of fun.
#23 by Floozy on September 17, 2009 - 9:39 am
‘Sort of fun’ as in you threw up in someone’s purse and woke up with a hooker? Or ’sort of fun’ as in you had a few drinks and were home in bed by 11?
#24 by cbob on September 17, 2009 - 2:50 pm
On a wednesday night it’s the latter
#25 by shenanigans on September 17, 2009 - 4:48 pm
I heard it referred to on a friend’s FB status as “that socially inept event”. D’oh.
#26 by Donk on September 22, 2009 - 11:39 am
Hey Loki, can we host the cVillain archives here too? Apparently having anything to do with the old site is no longer a requirement for hosting their archives.
#27 by Donk on October 2, 2009 - 12:40 pm
cVillain is now posting names and court case information of rape allegations. That’s a new low in tastelessness. I’m officially over cVillain 2.0.
The hypocrisy of the situation is astounding.
#28 by Thurston on October 8, 2009 - 12:53 am
I miss the old CVillain.
#29 by Loki on October 8, 2009 - 9:26 am
You and me both, buddy. What’s dead is dead.
#30 by Street on October 9, 2009 - 12:38 pm
If I hired 1,000 monkeys to bang away on a 1,000 keyboards to post 1,000 comments (aka – flinging shit) on cVillain would it keep me from going bananas?
#31 by Loki on October 9, 2009 - 1:15 pm
It certainly wouldn’t be any less substantive than what’s there now!
#32 by Toaster Strudel on October 9, 2009 - 5:58 pm
that site isnt even fun to troll anymore
#33 by Donk on December 9, 2009 - 11:25 am
Ok.. so I think this post deserves a revisit.
I had just about forgotten about cVillain until a couple of the old regulars brought some posts on it to my attention. The posts were fairly par for the course per the sleaze-factor and the most entertaining stuff on there was some attention-fueled bickering in the comments.
In Ian’s defense… (and I hear he needs plenty these days *rimshot!*), the site isn’t that horrible anymore. There’s plenty of vapid content, but that’s not really unique to cVillain 2.0. I have to admit that there is a somewhat steady stream of ‘decent’ content nowadays. It’s not enough to make me return to my status as a regular, but it does leave me a bit puzzled.
Where is all the activity? The place seems like a ghost town. I think that what the current team is throwing down deserves some merit, but it seems to be receiving almost none. Has the old guard completely moved on? Maybe all of those people that claimed they’d never come back after some of the initial faux pas have made good on their word?
Anyone?

there is not enough content for me to talk shit about. talking shit inspires talking shit.
all of the NEW WRITERS have only really posted once…
I suspect Ian is caught up in his day job and this is a back-burner hobby.
#35 by rhymes with orange on December 9, 2009 - 11:36 am
also if you want entertainment, check out Ian’s fb page
#36 by Loki on December 9, 2009 - 3:41 pm
I dunno. I think that Cvillain shutting down initially was a cold shower for some people who realized ‘Oh fuck – I should do something more productive’, and others started new blogs (ahem). We can reminisce about how much fun it once was – that’s what the internet is all about.
Personally I’m happy we convinced b’yo (somehow) to write here. Must be all the money we pay to writers.
