I love coffee
There are few things I love more in life than a good cup of coffee. Fox Park Cafe on the University Corner has been giving me my daily dose of caffeine for nearly 2 years. I’m not a supreme coffee nerd, but I’m getting there. I prepare Vietnamese coffee at home like it’s a drug and I have the opium den decor on order.
Here are some reasons to continue your coffee habit:
1) Caffeine increases the effects of painkillers like aspirin.
2) When you’re high as a kite, impress your friends by reading the grounds.
3) Reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease and diabetes. [credit]
Here are some reasons to knock that shit off:
1) If you buy coffee at drive through windows you’ll spend nearly 45hours a year waiting in line.
2) One punishment for drinking coffee was being sewn into a leather bag and thrown out to sea alive. [credit]
Downtown history
The Albemarle Historical Society has a great online photography exhibit of downtown and West Main Street from 1976 [photography by John Shepherd]. See if you can pick through them and recognize what some of those businesses are now. On my way into work this morning, I found this building.
Here’s what it looks like now:

When I start a cult
The 40th anniversary of the Manson Massacre was a few days ago. This makes me think that I could start one. I’m tall, charismatic, crazy (according to ex-girlfriends), and fairly organized. However, I still need some others to do my dirty work and make up for my shortcomings. I can think of a few locals that I would want to have in my cult (when I start one):
Dave Norris (he’s tall, handsome, and would be great for recruitment of new members)
Bang! waitresses (foxes. also good for recruitment of new members)
Gregg from Crush (where are you Gregg! Our cult needs wine)
Death Valley has been done before, so I’m thinking of relocating to Nelson County. That seems to be the place for it. Or maybe we could move into the skeleton of the Landmark Hotel.
Who else should I send a cult e-vite to?
Weekend outlook
What is the world coming to? Hackers attacked Twitter and Facebook yesterday, there was a suspicious package threat at UVA, and a guy in Charlottesville got shot over a cigar.
At least it’s the weekend, here’s a couple things going on:

Eli Cook + Pantherburn @ Fridays after Five (if you like blues)
Wrenn Magnum @ Miller’s (if you like awesome rockabilly/comedy)
Suitcase show @ The Garage
Booze @ every bar on the mall (if you like to drink)
Saturday (8/08):
George Jones @ The Pavilion
Raquellos @ The Bridge, PAI
Summer Sprint Night @ Community Bikes
Keith Morris @ Mono Loco
Six Day Bender @ 12th Street Tap House
Trying something new
I think I’m going to try something new. When Cvillain died people wanted a place to go – and I’m going to open this up and see what happens. Bring us your tired, your weak, your grumpy, your hot and bothered. I wasn’t sad about Cvillain going away – I think it was time. By the same token there were a lot of people who felt a bit like they didn’t have a source for information or a venue to speak their minds anymore. I hope that maybe this will be such a venue. Post your nightclub reviews, your complaints, your diabolical rants, whatever.
